SUMMA CONTRA GENTILES. Very attractive early folio edition of this important work by the dominican Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). The text is elegantly printed in gotica rotunda on 2 columns, and 54 lines with headings and titles in littera gotica textualis quadrata. Versal letters in lombardic uncial.

Title page with multiple typefaces bearing the first three lines in textualis quadrata with the the first two letters of the word Summa in lombardic uncial , the first one being finely decorated with allegoric motives. It is possible to see, inside the convoluted spirals of the letter S, an armed man in the act of killing the devil in the upper side and a unicorn in the lower part. Another decorated initial, extending over 11 lines, marks the incipit of LIBER PRIMUS on (recto folio A1) depicting the author, encircled within the letter V of the word Veritate, seated in front of a bookstand and inspired to write his work by the Holy Spirit symbolized in the form of a dove standing on his shoulder.

The Summa contra Gentiles was written by the Dominican St. Thomas Aquinas over a period of six years between 1258 and 1264. It is split roughly into two sections, books I, II and III covering truths that naturally are accessible to the human intellect, and the last book IV dealing with truths for which natural reason alone is considered inadequate.

INCUNABLE. 1489. The work is of uncertain attribution and has been ascribed to Albertus Magnus, Bishop of Ratisbone ( ca. 1193-1280) or alternatively to Hugo Argentoratis by different scholars ( 1210-1270) (Cfr. New Cath. encyc., I, p. 258.). The Compendium is a treatise on the fundamental theological truths, the ones each man should keep as compass during his journey through life. It includes considerations and thoughts about faith, our creator, good and evil deeds ( De Malo, De Superbia), and also the custodian angels (De custodia angelorum) and terrestrial paradise (Paradisi terrestris proprietates.)

Text elegantely printed in gotica rotunda on double columns, 50 lines per column with page headings in gotica textualis and capital spaces. Half title page consisting of two lines printed in littera gotica textualis quadrata with the initial of the word Compendium in lumbardic uncial.

The works are bound together in a solid near contemporary monastic binding (early sixteenth century) in quarter blindtooled pigskin with four raised bands on spine mounted on wood boards with bevelled edges and 2 brass clasps, one of the 2 fitting is missing. Almost entirely faded signs of pale yellow colouring on edges. Worm holes especially on the back cover, limited in extent and number in the interior part, in the overall not disturbing but causing the occasional loss of a few letters even though not compromising the readability of the text.

Interiors in overall good conditions, with the mentioned holes, printed on strong paper with generous margins, intriguing contemporary annotation of old hands on a few pages in the margins in dark brown ink and occasionally in purple ink calligraphically distinct and belonging certainly to different hands. Faded water stains on the lower margins especially in the first part more marked in the first pages and a closed tear on the upper right corner of the first title page easily restorable. With the mentioned marginal defects a complete copy, including blank leafes.
